PERMIT MILESTONE UNLOCKS NEXT PHASE OF ALBY GREEN HYDROGEN AND SUSTAINABLE FUELS PROJECT
15th of April 2025, Ånge (Sweden)
- Major milestone for Alby PtX and green hydrogen production in Alby
- Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Permit legally binding as of today
- Initiates the next step, large scale production of sustainable aviation fuel
The Alby PtX project in Ånge, Sweden, has reached a major milestone as its Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Permit now legally binding. Just one year after the process began, the project is cleared to move into the next development phase—large-scale green hydrogen production and, ultimately, the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Initiated by RES, the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, the project has grown to include Prime Capital and, more recently, Norsk e-Fuel as co-owners and key development partners for SAF production. Together, the three companies will drive the further development of the project. The permit confirms that critical environmental considerations—ranging from human health and biodiversity to water, air, climate, and cultural heritage—have been addressed and approved.
Matilda Afzelius, CEO RES Nordic, comments: “This final permit marks both the end of RES’ successful work as sole developer and the start of an exciting new phase. At the same time, it’s an important milestone for our joint journey ahead as project developers together with the Alby PtX owners and our partners, Prime Capital and Norsk e-Fuel. Now when the permit is legally binding, we can accelerate the process to bring fossil-free fuels to market.”
The permit regulates the production of green hydrogen in Alby based on a 500 MW electrolyzer capacity with a maximum production volume of 80,000 tons of green hydrogen per year. Together with biogenic CO2, at least part of it will be converted to sustainable aviation fuel.
With the permit now final and unappealable, the project team is moving full steam ahead. Preparations are already underway to initiate the next phase – the permitting process for a state-of-the-art e-SAF (electro Sustainable Aviation Fuel) plant, which will be co-located with a hydrogen plant.
Karl Hauptmeier, CEO Norsk e-Fuel, adds: “This permit reflects the strong groundwork RES has laid to prepare for green hydrogen production. It also marks an important step forward for the Alby PtX project, providing the foundation to develop the site for e-SAF production. We’re looking forward to continuing this progress together with our partners and advancing our common goals.”
